Before TheIssa had a public world people could enter, he was trying to make sense of the one he was living in. In 2016, the traumatic jail sentencing of his close friend Derek made loyalty more than an idea. Someone close to him was suddenly separated from ordinary life, and devotion offered no way to undo it.
That helplessness sat beside anger, ambition, and the shifting demands of his relationships. “Mixed Signals” belongs to this emotional beginning: clothes becoming armor, images becoming a way to choose how he was seen, and music holding feelings he could not bring into agreement. He was learning to occupy the frame even when he did not yet know how to explain the person inside it.
Derek’s sentencing sharpened his unease with institutional judgment. A system could restrict a person without accounting for everything that person meant to the people who loved him. At the same time, a quieter kind of judgment kept the artist waiting: the fear that he had to resolve himself completely before anyone else could understand the work.
The first change was small enough to happen inside a song. Grief did not have to cancel ambition, nor anger cancel devotion; music could hold them together. The Sleeping Dragon was still largely hidden, but what had seemed like confusion was beginning to sound like a voice. Giving that voice a visible form would be the next risk.
