Owning the Image
In 2021, TheIssa came back into the frame. The photographs became more frequent and more intentional: clothing, posture, hair, expression, and setting worked together. After the interruption, being visible was a choice he could make without giving up control of how he was represented.
That return was real, but it was not yet a sustained public presence. Much of the story still lived across conversations, photographs, drafts, and plans. He had not performed live, and someone encountering the work could not yet follow the whole world as clearly as he could see it in his mind.
The clarity of that inner picture created its own delay. Preparing the perfect presentation could feel like progress toward an arrival that kept moving further away. He could refine the image indefinitely without ever having to find out what happened when the work left his hands.
Reclaiming the image was therefore only part of the return. The more difficult movement was toward letting the work be encountered while the larger vision was still unfinished. An audience could not form a relationship with a reveal that never came. The next step needed to leave behind something people could actually hear again.
